Richard Glasson MITCHELL 1835-1902, b. Trevellas, Cornwall, England, son of William MITCHELL and Mary GLASSON was married in 1854, St Agnes, Cornwall, England to Elizabeth WHITE 1836-1897, b. Cornwall, England, daughter of James WHITE and Elizabeth GREENAWAY. Richard and Elizabeth along with their first child William Henry MITCHELL (aged 1y), arrived at Portland, Victoria in January 1857 on the "Mary Ann" and settled at Heywood, north of Portland where 2 more children were born in 1858 and 1860. They moved further north to the Sandford district on the Wannon river and settled and farmed at Bowtell's Creek for a few years.

Richard & Elizabeth MITCHELL selected land on Gum Creek, south of Sandford, near the Wannon River, in 1865, and named the selection "Trevellas" after his place of birth in Cornwall, England. Richard was a farmer and Glenelg Shire Councillor 1881-1890 representing the South Riding of the shire. His wife died at "Trevellas" near Sandford in 1897, aged 61y. In 1898, on medical advice, Richard MITCHELL took a trip back to Cornwall, England to catch up with many of his siblings who were still alive. He returned to his property "Trevellas" Gum Creek, south of Sandford where he died in 1902. Richard and Elizabeth were both buried in the Sandford Cemetery.
