Kilbeheny, Co Limerick, Ireland son of John HEFFERNAN and Margaret MURPHY and possibly arrived on the ship "King of Algeria" at Geelong, Victoria in 1861, along with brothers Owen and Patrick and his widowed mother Margaret WELSH (formerly HEFFERNEN, nee MURPHY) c.1824-1911 and her 2nd husband John WELSH c.1827-1900.

Denis HEFFERNAN married Johanna FITZGERALD in 1871 at Hamilton, Victoria and were divorced in 1886, after the births of 7 children. Johanna FITZGERALD 1850-1912, b. 1850, Co Limerick, Ireland, daughter of Michael FITZGERALD and Honora SHEEHY.

Denis and Johanna HEFFERNAN had a farm in the parish of Carapook (Muntham) and this appears to be where the 7 children were born and one died as a child.

Johanna HEFFERNAN died in 1912 in Melbourne, Victoria and was buried in the Coburg Cemetery.
